How it works

Four steps, and none of them involve money

Brtr is a small app on purpose. Here is everything it does, in the order you'll meet it.

  1. 01

    List an item

Up to five photos, a title, a condition, and the one field that matters.

Photos first — the primary slot is the biggest thing on the screen, because a listing without a good first photo doesn't get swiped right.

Then Looking for. This is the field the whole product turns on. Write "a travel tripod" and you become findable by everyone who has one. Leave it as "Nothing Specific" and you're relying on people to guess.

Condition is a four-way choice — New, Like New, Good, Fair — and it's colour-coded consistently everywhere it appears, so you learn to read it at a glance.

  2. 02

    Swipe the deck

Today's picks arrive as a stack. Right to trade, left to pass.

The deck is a small, finite set — not an infinite feed. When you've been through it, it tells you so and offers to shuffle. We'd rather you close the app than scroll it.

Underneath, the matching looks at what you have, what you're looking for, and how far away the other person is. A trade that needs a two-hour drive isn't a match.

Anything you swipe right on opens a conversation, not a purchase.

  3. 03

    Negotiate the swap

Offers are structured objects, not messages that say "deal?".

A trade proposal names what you're offering and what you want in exchange for it — colour-coded orange for what you give and marine for what you get, the same way round every time.

Either side can counter. Counters replace the offer rather than piling up, so there's always exactly one live proposal in a thread.

You can attach a note. You cannot attach a price, because there is nowhere to type one.

  4. 04

    Meet and confirm

A place, a time, then two confirmations and two ratings.

Once an offer is accepted, the trade grows a meet-up composer: location, date and time, and an optional note. It lives on the trade, not buried in the chat.

After the meet-up you both answer one question — did the trade happen? Only when both sides say yes does it count as completed.

Then you rate each other. Your completed trades and your rating are your whole reputation on Brtr; there's nothing else to game.

Anatomy of an offer

Orange is what you give. Marine is what you get.

The direction colour-coding is identical on every surface in the app, so you never have to read the labels twice.

The three questions everyone asks

What if the two items aren't worth the same?
Then don't trade. There's no mechanism to settle a difference, which sounds like a limitation and turns out to be the point — you're both deciding whether you want the other thing more than your own thing, which is a simpler question than agreeing on a number.
Can I trade more than one item at once?
Yes. An offer can put several of your items on the Offering side against one item on the other. Bundles are common for exactly the reason above.
Do I have to meet in person?
Right now, yes. Brtr has no shipping, no logistics and no escrow, and adding them would drag money back into the product. Trades happen between people who are close enough to meet.
