About
We took the money out and the product got better
Brtr started from a small observation: the moment you put a price on a second-hand thing, the conversation stops being about whether anyone wants it.
Placeholder origin story — replace this paragraph with the real one. Roughly: who started Brtr, where, and what specific moment made a trading app feel necessary rather than interesting. Two or three paragraphs is plenty; founders consistently over-write this section.
What we can say honestly is what the constraint did to the product. Removing price removed the haggling, the lowballing, the "is this still available" messages, and the entire category of listing that exists to be flipped. What's left is a much smaller question, asked between two people: do you want my thing more than I want yours?
It also removed our most obvious business model, which we think is worth being upfront about. Brtr takes no cut because there is nothing to take a cut of. Placeholder: state how Brtr will actually make money — or that it deliberately doesn't yet and how it's funded. People will ask, and a vague answer here reads worse than no answer.
What we believe
Four opinions the product is built on
The second-best use of a thing is someone else's first
Most of what sits unused in a cupboard isn't broken and isn't worthless — it's just finished being useful to you. Trading is the shortest path from that to someone who wants it.
No money, and we mean structurally
Not 'no fees for now'. There is no price field, no cart, no checkout and no payment rail anywhere in the codebase. A product that can't take a cut has to be useful for a different reason.
Small beats complete
The deck is finite. The offer is one object. The card shows two facts. Every time we've added a fifth thing to a screen, it's been the wrong call.
Local by design
Trades happen between people who can meet. That makes Brtr a collection of neighbourhoods rather than a global marketplace, and we'd rather open one city properly than ten badly.

Small, and intending to stay that way for a while.
